Acquisition of information systems and their integration into the organization

Goals:

1) Understand the foundational technical and data management issues in today’s networked information applications

2) Learn and apply some widely-used and practical tools and programs

3) Study how organizations manage technology projects, and get some experience with the business and process issues behind web sites

Elements of the Course:

Readings:   To be completed in advance of class, from a variety of sources, all of them available on-line at no charge to Maryland students.   The course has no single “required” text.

In Class Discussion:   There will be no grades for in-class exercises and participation; however, attendance in class is likely to be essential to mastering the material.    Some sessions will require that you bring a computer to class.

Homework: Short (several hour) homework assignments will test mastery of each week’s material and provide practice.    Homework must be completed and submitted on time, prior to class on the due date.

Projects: There will a term project, completed in phases, focusing on the three major areas of the course – design, technology, and process.   Consistent with the real-life team focus of this sort of work, and to capitalize on complementary individual skill sets, the projects and presentations will be done by groups of 3-4 individuals

Written Exam: There will be an in-class written exam. The final exam date is May 5, 2016
